Breakfast with Buddha: A Novel
The only thing certain about a journey is that it has a beginning and an end?for you never know what may happen along the way. And so it is with this journey into the minds and souls of two very different men?one of them in search of the truth, the other a man who may have already found it.

When Otto Ringling, a husband, father, and editor, departs on a cross-country drive from his home in a New York City suburb to the North Dakota farmhouse in which he grew up, he is a man on a no-nonsense mission: to settle the estate of his recently deceased parents. However, when his flaky sister convinces him to give a ride to her guru, a crimson-robed Skovordinian monk, Otto knows there will be a few bumps in the road.

As they venture across America, Otto and the affable, wise, irritating, and inscrutible holy man engage in a battle of wits and wisdom. Otto, a born skeptic, sees his unwanted passenger as a challenge: a man who assumes the knowledge of the ages yet walks a mortal's path. But he also sees their unexpected pairing as an opportunity to take Volya Rinpoche on a journey of cultural discovery, with visits to quintessentially American landmarks (the Hershey's factory, Wrigley Field) and forays into some favorite American pastimes (bowling, miniature golf, dining out).

It is Otto, however, who has embarked on the real journey, that of self-discovery, led by his strange and remarkable passenger. By the time they reach North Dakota, Otto's head is reeling with the understanding that so much of what he had believed?as well as so much of what he had doubted?must be rethought before his journey can truly begin.

Witty and inventive, Breakfast with Buddha takes readers into the heart of America and in the process shows us a man about to discover his own true heart.

18) The enlightment of Otto
The book starts as a road trip. Otto and Ren drive from the east coast to North Dakota to close an estate. Ren is an eastern spritual author/teacher/Guru. Otto is a sucessful happily married exec with all the middle class trappings-nice home, cars, loving wife, kids, successful career and fancy family vacations.

Something is missing. Otto has a lot of anger and occasionally throws fits. Otto is never at rest, never at peace. His mind is constantly churning, planning, worrying and wondering.

On the trip Ren spends a lot of time apparently doing nothing. He sits and stares. At night he mediatates. Otto's mind goes into hyper drive, thying to figure why Ren is so passive.

The beauty of the book is not the trip, not about what happens. The book is about the enlightenment of Otto. He learns to react to hostility with compassion, to react to anger with kindness. He lears to overcome internal pressure and tension with peace and contentment. Otto starts understanding that when Ren is doing nothing, he is experiencing harmony and leting life unfold. Ren learns from life rather than trying to control it. The book unfods like a flower as Otto grows spiritually. He learns to heal from his hyper life style. Otto's journey is so well written, so well described, that the reader cannot escape without being touched, affected, and influenced.

This is a very fine book and deserves a strong five star rating. I gave it four stars because I was not peased with the ending, which I felt, was inconsistent with the flow of the book.

Reading this book is a rewarding and entertaining experience.

16) Seems like a Chicken Soup for the Soul type of book
This book seems like it could be a Chicken Soup for the Soul type of book. Since I don't like those types of books, I didn't like this book. It is filled with so many politically correct cliches. For instance, the travelers are told about a place selling Mexican food that is in a bad part of town. But, they find that the food there is actually really good and the restaurant workers are very respectful and not scary after all. Or, once the main character is in a small town but just so happens to find a great massage therapist. Overall, the book was quite predictable and just seemed fake. I would recommend instead a book like The Empty Mirror which is a real account of someone's experience with Buddhism.

15) If only the ending had been different
This book was great, fascinating, all the way through -- until the ending. What a disappointment, and how unnecessary. I recommend it as a good read for anyone, if you just disregard the ending.

14) Good lessons on how to live delivered in the form of a novel
Reluctantly stuck with his sister's guru on a cross-country drive, a writer makes friends with a new way to view life. Well-written, with good life lessons and great reviews of good places to eat, this is a fast, feel-good read. I highly recommend it.
