83) The End of the Old West
This is my first Leif Enger novel and I was not disappointed and has a little bit everything for everyone. We have Monte Beckett, a so called writer who wrote a great book, but now has writer's block. He meets the strange and mysterious man named Glendon, forms not only a friendship when helping Glendon build a boat, but then decides to take off and the story is off and running as Glendon tries to make peace with himself while still running from Charlie Siringo, an aging Pinkerton detective, who's been on Glendon's trail for years.

I'm not exactly sure what the author was trying to portray here. Was Monte living out that second novel that just wouldn't come and we are part of the story? Was this actually the authors dream and his problems with writers block?

Regardless, I liked the story, loved the way the author narrated it and my only negative was that it did drag in a few places, thus the 4 star rating.

Higly recommended, especially to those who love Larry McMurty or Cormac McCarthy

82) It's all about friendship ....
Leif Enger has created another interesting, if not great novel about people. Mr. Enger chose to place his characters in the West and to make them cowboys of sorts. He could have made them spacemen on Mars and still succeeded with this story of friendship, how it evolves, how it endures. All of his characters, from the narrator to even those who may occupy only a few pages are well-crafted. Except for the bad guy who gets eaten by the snapping turtle (no, that's not a spoiler), they are all good folks that you'd be pleased to have at your Thanksgiving dinner table. The mysticism of Mr. Enger's first novel plays no part in this story, a classic 'road' book that you will enjoy for its easy prose, but more so for its cast of characters.

81) Intriguing Novel from Talented Author
The unlikey hero of Leif Enger's novel really resonated with me - who hasn't dreamed of writing the Great American Novel...or some form of it. What creative person hasn't worried that success will be followed by endless failure? Becket's journey to discover new meaning in his life with outlaw Glendon Hale - and a motley cast of characters - is masterfully drawn by Leif Enger.

80) A great modern western
This story has more of a Lonesome Dove kind of feel rather than a standard Louis L'amour novel, and it's great. An aging cowboy wants to go back and fix a mistake in his past, a writer follows along on this last adventure, and a mysterious gunman chases them both to settle an old score. It's the classic ingredients of a great story, and this doesn't disappoint. There aren't a lot of shoot-outs or anything like you'd expect from a regular western. This is more like the movie "Unforgiven", in which you know the lead character had a past and could be something more than he is now if the circumstances forced him to.

I've never read Enger's work before, but this was a great introduction to his writing.

79) another hit for Enger
I am always nervous about the 2nd book by an author who has a great first novel. I was with this title, but Enger shows that he is a truly gifted writer. Every character is memorable - especially Sringo - every place is memorable - every meal and so on. I am so glad to have read a book that is suspenseful and realistic about human nature without being crude. Not one vulgarity in these pages. That really says something about Enger's strength as an artist with words.
